This is one of those products that, when we first saw it, we went, oh, now that is cool. And it's good science too!
This dramatic demo provides an effective demonstration of the physics of pressure and the difference between force and pressure, allowing students to see the effects of applying force over a large area.
A balloon is placed on a bed of nails. Masses are slowly added to the loading plate over the balloon. As mass is added, the balloon will deform, contacting all nails at once. As there are 25 nails in the bed of nails, each nail is supporting only 1/25th of the total weight. With proper care, over 4kg or 8.8 lbs. can be supported by the balloon.
To show the opposite effect, use the single nail block - kablam! Have students figure out why.
Includes: bed of nails block, single nail block, supporting framework, top plate, 4 screws, instructions. Required but not included: balloon, masses.
