Product Information

Mad cow disease or Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) nearly devastated the US beef industry in the mid-nineties. This neurodegenerative, fatal condition in cows is also linked to the Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in humans who ingest BSE infected beef. One mode of BSE transmission throughout cattle populations is by the inclusion of infected cow or sheep parts in cattle feed, a practice that was banned in the United States in 1997.

In this experiment, students examine simulated PCR products from several feed mills, to determine any possible violations of the 1997 ban. Students will perform agarose gel electrophoresis and use their knowledge of DNA to formulate conclusions on the transmission of mad cow disease.

Includes enough materials to run six gels. Requires Horizontal Gel System and power supply, available separately.
