Product Information

Shake a flask of solution and observe the colors of a traffic light! This demonstration uses an oxidation-reduction reaction of a chromophore - indigo carmine dye. Upon shaking the flask, the yellow indigo carmine in solution is oxidized to the green form of the indicator. Upon sitting, it is reduced back to the yellow form, showing a red intermediate color during the reaction. The reaction can be demonstrated several times and a single solution preparation will work for over an hour. Includes: dextrose solution, sodium hydroxide solution, indigo carmine indicator solution, instructions. Required but not included: 250 mL flask with stopper, 100 mL graduated cylinder.
