In this data-gathering experiment, a spinning wheel is brought to rest by the friction between the hub and an aluminum cylinder fitted with a thermometer. In this way, the relationship between the rate of spinning and the thermal energy converted can be explored. The severely weighted wheel is also used in later demonstrations of mechanical energy conservation.
