Students demonstrate chaotic motion to you every day... now you can easily and dramatically demonstrate it back, with another one of Bruce Yeany's clever devices.
This pendulum can be used to show both simple harmonic motion and chaotic motion. By loosening one of the arms you can create two pendulums in one with different periods; by loosening both arms you can create three pendulums in one.
To demonstrate resonance, simply apply a small amount of energy to the multiple pendulums. When more energy is applied, so many variable forces act upon the multiple pendulums that the motion clearly becomes unpredictable, or chaotic. Grades 7-12.
