Product Information

Your young geologists will determine the location of an earthquake’s epicenter and its magnitude, using this inquiry-based activity. Greater understanding of quakes is gained through individual exploration. Measurements from seismograms, a time travel curve, and a compass, help students implement a technique called triangulation to locate the epicenter of the quake. Then they find the magnitude according to Richter’s scale. Developed by Science Kit’s Product Development Team.

Includes materials for 30 students, a large map of California (24″ x 36″), a pack of 30 student-sized maps, 12 safety compasses, colored pencils, and instructions with teacher’s guide and reproducible student worksheets. Grades 9–12.
