In Magnetism, students witness a search for a sunken ship using a robotic magnet detector that demonstrates the principles of magnetism. Animated graphics show how the Earth's poles and the alignment of the millions of magnets in some metals are related. Following this program students should be able to describe different ways of making a magnet and draw the field pattern produced by a bar magnet. Further, they will be able to answer such questions as "why does a compass needle always point in the same direction?", "why the presence of magnetic rocks in a mountain might present a problem for mountaineers?", and "what items, if dumped in a junkyard, could be picked up by an electromagnet?".
Magnetism is part of the five program Physical Science Series which uses real life applications, investigations and interactive questions, models and animations, humorous skits, historical sketches, and filmed experiments to illuminate the scientific concepts being covered. Each program uses standards aligned lessons that will fit all physical science curricula from grades 5 to 9. Young host-narrators make the presentations more interesting to students.
