The ripple tank is an essential physics teaching tool both for demonstrations and lab work. With this important aid reflection, refraction, diffraction, and interference are easily investigated and the meaning of wavelength, velocity, frequency, and phase become clear.
Unique foam beaches allow our Ripple Tank to provide performance superior to that of any other tank. These specially cut, wedge-shaped beaches dampen reflections more effectively than hard sloping beaches or vertical walls. Reflections are all but eliminated.
The bottom is a single sheet of absolutely flat plate glass that provides optically clear, distortion-free viewing. The unobstructed glass measures 43 cm on each side providing 1849 cm2 of clear viewing area. The perimeter of the tank is molded of heavy gauge styrene with a rigid internal frame that prevents twisting or warping. The hardwood legs thread directly into the frame, and come with adjustable, shock-absorbing feet.
The rippler bar is oil finished hardwood, 40 cm long. The two point sources may be mounted with three different spacings; one can be center mounted. The rippler motor, which snaps onto the rippler bar, comes with 75 cm long banana-plug-tipped wires. It operates on 1.5 to 6 V, DC and has an adjustable counterweight for controlling amplitude.
Besides the tank, legs, rippler bar, and rippler motor, the unit also includes a vertical light support, 4 paraffin blocks, a parabolic reflector, an adjustable support and suspension system for the rippler, and a 20 x 20 cm sheet of clear plate glass with ground edges for refraction experiments. Also included is a large, white plastic viewing screen. Assembly instructions are included; no tools are required.
