Stories of infants swapped at birth seem to appear with alarming regularity in the popular press. How would parents be able to find out if their babies had been mixed up at the hospital?
Using simulated blood, students determine the blood type of two sets of parents and two infants to ascertain which baby belongs to which family. The “blood” in this lab contains non-biological components which simulate red and white blood cells providing results almost indistinguishable from real human blood.
This fascinating, hands-on investigation can serve as an introduction to forensic science applications and lead to such ethical discussions as is it in the best interests of a child to remove it from the only family it has ever known and “return” it to “complete strangers?”
