Isolated from human nasopharynx, saliva, and sputum. Spontaneously agglutinates in saline.

Isolated from sewage, human intestines, and urinary tract infections. Spreading colonies are seen on agar growth medium.

Nitrogen fixation, produces nodules on legume roots. Bacteroids from nodules can be X, Y, and club shapes.

Frequent human isolate. Causes gastroenteritis.

Ames test strain for detecting carcinogens. Causes infection in humans. 

Both of these strains of Serratia marcescens are colorless mutants when plated alone, but when grown together, they produce a red pigment.

isolated from human intestine. Lactose positive and sucrose positive after a few days’ growth. Causes a mild form of dysentery.

Beta hemolysis on blood. Causes wound infections and septicemia. 

This yellow, shiny organism is known to cause wound infections and more famously, toxic shock syndrome.

Grows on dead tissues. Novobiocin resistant (S. epidermidis and S. aureus novobiocin sensitive). 

Isolated from milk and udders of cows. Lancefield group B, beta hemolysis. Causes infection of the female genital tract, maternal septicemia, neonatal infections. Camp test positive; resistant to bacitracin.

Lancefield group C, beta hemolysis. Causes strangles in horses. May be pathogenic in humans. Camp test negative; resistant to bacitracin, does not ferment lactose. 

Isolated from the alimentary tract of cows. Lancefield group D, gamma hemolysis. May be pathogenic in humans.
