In this lab, students test Ward's safe and nontoxic simulated urine samples for pH, sugar, and protein and observe the samples through a microscope for further analysis. The students are provided with four different case studies and simulated urine for each patient. They perform a urinalysis on each sample. Students learn the basis of urinalysis and how it is used to diagnose medical problems while they employ the basic Structures and Properties (LS1) Framework Principles.

This lab activity takes approximately 30 to 45 minutes to complete. It is aligned with all published National Standards. Pre- and post-laboratory assessments and vocabulary words target specific Science and Engineering Practices and Common Core standards. The teacher guide contains specific Did You Know concepts that link the real world with the scientific standards explored. This kit includes a student copymaster and material for 10 setups.

 : This kit includes simulated urine samples, pH strips, Benedict’s solution, biuret solution, graduated plastic pipets, medicine cups, a package of microscope slides, a package of coverslips, and a urine specimen microscope slide. Test tubes, test tube holders, 400 mL beakers, a hot plate, a compound microscope, heat protective gloves, and water are needed but not included.
