Learn about the flame test, an analytical technique often used for the identification of certain elements, primarily metal ions.

  • Students will observe the different colors of flames when different elements are passed through a flame.
  • Aligned to NGSS Practices
  • Performance expectations: MS-PS1-1, MS-PS1-2, HS-PS1-2, HS-PS1-4
  • Disciplinary core ideas: PS1.A, PS1.B
  • Cross cutting concepts include patterns, scale proportion and quantity, energy and matter
  • Engineering practices include developing and using models, analyzing and interpreting data, scientific knowledge is based on empirical evidence

The flame test is an analytical technique often used for the identification of certain elements, primarily metal ions. The color of the flame is observed and the spectra of light emitted from the flame is viewed through a spectroscope.

Traditionally, this test poses safety concerns for students in a laboratory setting. This kit minimizes these concerns by utilizing small candles that are easier to manage in a lab setting. There is no loss in the clarity of the emission spectra from the candles, making it easy for students to observe and deduce what element is causing the colored flame. This kit contains enough material for 6 groups. Teacher's Manual and Student Study Guide copymasters are included.

Delivery information: Kit includes instructional manual and SDS booklet.

Caution: This product can expose you to chemicals including Methanol and Respirable crystalline silica, which are known to the State of California to cause cancer and reproductive harm. For more information go to http://www.P65Warnings.ca.gov.
