The knob on top of the stopper accepts a charge. When the charge enters the flask, the aluminum leaves separate. The size of the charge affects how much the leaves separate.

The electroscope consists of a 250 mL Pyrex flask with a nickel-plated rod, which is attached to a rubber stopper.
