For an overall view, have your students examine the complete model of a whole Paramecium, enlarged 1,600X and mounted on a stand for easy viewing by the entire class. Sectioned longitudinally, the outer half can be detached to reveal macro- and micronuclei, a contractile vacuole, membranelles, myonemes, neuroneme network, food vacuoles, and formation of endo- and ectoplasm. The second model, the pellicle enlarged 6,500X, provides an up-close view of trichocysts and ciliary bending action illustrating a metachronal wave. Both models are mounted on a common base; the pellicle is mounted directly on the base, while the Paramecium is mounted on a stand.
