Toxic spills and contaminants are constantly entering our environment from industrial, agricultural, and even natural sources. With Ward’s AP® Environmental science: Bioassays, LC50, and Monitoring Environmental Toxins, students learn essential techniques for performing toxicity tests through a series of engaging, hands-on investigations. They test the effects of salt on plant growth and examine the environmental impacts of winter road salt runoff. Acting as environmental consultants, students use innovative UV bioassay techniques to analyze the effects of pesticide runoff on Daphnia in a simulated farm pond. Finally, they apply their skills to design and test their own hypotheses using lemna (duckweed) as a bioindicator for water quality and contaminant sensitivity.
Aligned with AP® Environmental science and NGSS standards, these flexible activities can be performed together or independently, helping students develop key data analysis, critical thinking, and experimental design skills while exploring real-world environmental challenges.
