Zebra Mussel Sampler
Product Details & Documents
A multi-plate sampler that helps students and educators collect and compare zebra mussel populations by size and density in freshwater environments.
Includes four plates of increasing size to capture mussels at different size classes
Constructed with economical materials for easy handling and classroom field use
Spacer design keeps plates separated for clear sampling layers
Plates can be weighed down or tethered for secure placement in the water
Supports simple lab analysis of aquatic invasive species populations
This multi-plate sampler is designed to help students and educators collect data on zebra and quagga mussels in bodies of freshwater. It uses a stacked set of plates arranged by increasing size so that mussels that attach at different depths and size classes can be sampled separately. Spacers between the plates create uniform gaps that allow mussels to settle on each surface during a sampling period. After deployment below the water surface, the kit can be retrieved and disassembled for counting and measuring organisms on each plate.
Because the plates are made from economical, disposable materials, this sampler helps prevent cross-contamination between water bodies and is suitable for repeat classroom activities. After retrieval, students can compare settlement patterns and density on different plate sizes, reinforcing lessons in aquatic ecology, invasive species monitoring, and hands-on scientific observation.
