Teach students about crystal growth
Collected in Morocco
Geodes provide a tangible example of how minerals crystallize inside rock cavities over time. Before cracking, students can hypothesize what the inside will look like based on the geode’s external features. They can then test their hypotheses, record observations, and draw conclusions. The milky quartz geodes have a white or cream thin outer matrix that is easy to break. The inside has fine white to translucent sparkly quartz crystals that give the appearance of sugar grains. Rather than the 'traditional' geode people think of that is completely hollow, the Amethyst geodes contain smaller openings with individual crystals (sometimes double-terminated) inside them.
Caution: Adult supervision recommended.
