What is ozone and why is it so important? In this engaging, hands-on lab kit, students explore both the sources and functions of stratospheric and ground-level (tropospheric) ozone, examining how each impacts human health and the environment. Through a series of real-world, standards-based activities, they create Schöenbein test strips to measure local ozone levels, analyze and interpret real atmospheric data from the south pole to study the relationship between ozone depletion and UV exposure, and design their own ozone-monitoring gardens using sensitive plant species to detect ground-level pollution.

Aligned with AP® environmental science and NGSS standards, this comprehensive kit builds students’ data analysis, critical thinking, and environmental reasoning skills while connecting global atmospheric issues to local, observable phenomena. Activities can be completed individually or together, offering flexible options for a variety of classroom settings.
