Students follow the case of a mother with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and conduct simulated genetic tests to determine if she and her son have Alpha-1 deficiency, a genetic predisposition for COPD.

They then model the correlation between COPD and Alpha-1 deficiency and explore environmental and occupational factors that increase the risk for COPD.
