Les échantillons de minéraux sont découpés en différentes tailles pour répondre aux divers besoins des utilisateurs, avec des usages courants tels que l’identification par les étudiants, les présentations utilisées lors de cours et de démonstrations, ou encore sous forme d’éclats pour des tests pratiques d’identification physique en laboratoire. Ces échantillons de minéraux illustrent également un certain nombre de caractéristiques géologiques classiques, telles que le clivage, et des collections de minéraux peuvent être utilisées pour tester la dureté de Mohs d’autres minéraux et les comparer.
