The NED method is widely used in the quantitative analysis of nitrite and nitrate in water samples. NED readily undergoes a diazonium coupling reaction in the presence of nitrite to give a strongly colored pink azo compound. The intensity of the color is directly proportional to the concentration of nitrite in the sample. Due to the significant intensity of the developed color even at very low nitrite/nitrate concentrations, lower detection limits and measurement ranges are possible vs. chromotropic acid kits. In addition, the nitrate measurement uses only zinc which is less toxic than cadmium, making handling and disposal safer.

Low dissolved oxygen levels in surface water systems usually indicate serious pollution

Kit provides measurement of ortho- (reactive) and meta- (condensed) phosphate (requires hot acid digestion).

Dissolved Oxygen in water test kits for environmental and drinking water applications (ppm range) employ the indigo carmine method. The reduced form of indigo carmine reacts with D.O. to form a blue product. The indigo carmine methodology is not subject to interferences from temperature, salinity, or dissolved gases such as sulfide, which plague users of D.O. meters.

Most natural waters range from pH 4 to pH 9, but commonly are above pH 7 because of carbonates and bicarbonates (alkalinity).
