Osmosis and Diffusion Lab Activity
Educational Classroom Kits and Activities
How do molecules move into and out of a cell?

  • Kit employs NGSS Life Science DCI LS1
  • Pre- and post-laboratory assessments included
  • Lab aligned with National Standards
  • Assessments and vocabulary words target common core standards
  • Estimated lab time: 45 minutes
  • Aligned to NGSS standards (MS/HS: LS1)
This lab addresses osmosis, diffusion, and the function of these processes in maintaining homeostasis in the cell. Students use models to simulate the movement of water and nutrients across a cell membrane. The movement of molecules across the membrane is simulated using dialysis tubing and solutions of varying compositions. By employing the Life Science Framework Standard (LS1), this experiment helps students understand and explain how cell size and shape affects rates of diffusion and pose scientific questions about the selective permeability properties of cell membranes.

This kit is aligned with all published National Standards. Pre and post-laboratory assessments and vocabulary words target specific "Did You Know" concepts that link the real world with the scientific standards explored. The activity includes a teacher’s guide, a student copymaster, and material for 15 students or lab groups.

The kit is also available for purchase with a link to a NewPath digital lesson, which includes a variety of resources on the topic, including background information, illustrations and self-assessments.

Ordering information: This kit includes glucose/starch solution, iodine potassium iodide solution (IKI), glucose testing strips, cups, pipettes, and dialysis tubing. A graduated cylinder, beaker, distilled water, scissors, a tape measurer or ruler, and string are needed but not included.
