Photosynthesis and Respiration Lab Activity
With this lab, students gain experience from analyzing plant growth from soil, water, and the atmosphere.

  • Students Gain Understand of Photosynthesis
  • Kit Aligns with All Published National Standards
  • Assessments and Vocabulary Words Target Common Core Standards
  • Activities Employ Framework Science Standards LS1 and LS2
  • Lab Duration: Two to Four Weeks, Longer if Desired
Students monitor the growth of plants that are in controlled environments. Some plants are open to the atmosphere, some are sealed in a plastic bag, and some bagged plants are open to the atmosphere periodically. For the second option in this lab, students do not monitor the amount of water the plants receive. These exercises increase students' understanding of photosynthesis and their ability to monitor plant growth. While performing these activities, students employ Framework Science Standards (LS1) and (LS2). This kit is aligned with all published National Standards. Pre and post-laboratory assessments and vocabulary words target specific Science and Engineering Practices and Common Core standards. The teacher guide also contains specific "Did You Know" concepts that link the real world with scientific standards explored. This kit includes enough material for 10 groups of students.

The combined introduction, setup, and seed-sowing require one-to-two class periods. The duration of the experiment requires 10-15 minutes each day for two to four weeks, longer if desired. At conclusion, harvesting, measurement, data tabulation, discussion, and cleanup require one-to-two class periods.

Ordering information: This kit includes a packet of 50 Rapid Radish seeds, a growing and watering system (tray), self-sealing plastic bags, a medium packet of Rapid Radish growth, a packet of fertilizer, stakes and twist ties, pollinating brushes, plant labels, plastic pipets, bottle of algae inhibitor (copper sulfate), a growing guide, a teacher's guide, and a student's guide. Lights (per growing guide), a balance (scale), a measuring cylinder, an oven, forceps, scissors, and water are needed but not included.
