Before using this kit, I had only done the electrophoresis of dyes with my classes. I was overwhelmed at first with all of the steps, but everything was explained well and I was confident in the procedure by the time I needed to use it with my class. I was very appreciative that the instructions explained various places that were good stopping points. We did this activity over three days (block schedule) in my forensic science class. We had some excellent results and students were so excited to have success. Make sure students are proficient in the use of micropipets as I think most gels that did not turn out were due to errors in pipetting.

I have used this product and find it easy to use in the classroom. Students find it interesting and a fun way to learn about DNA. I hope to use more DNA items in the future.

Ward's® DNA Detectives Lab Activity
Educational Classroom Kits and Activities
How can DNA help solve a murder mystery?

  • NGSS Life Science DCIs LS1, LS3
  • Pre and post-laboratory assessments
  • Links to real world concepts
  • Estimated class/lab time required: 200 minutes over 2 to 3 days
  • Aligned to NGSS standards (MS/HS: LS1, LS3)
In this lab activity, students will use restriction enzymes to digest the DNA of four suspects in a criminal investigation and separate the DNA samples using agarose gel electrophoresis. Once they have completed the DNA analysis, they will compare the banding patterns for each suspect's DNA to a sample found at the crime scene in an attempt to find the true criminal. While performing this lab activity, students will employ NGSS Life Science Disciplinary Core Ideas LS1 (Structures and Processes) and LS3 (Heredity).

This kit has been aligned with all published National Standards. Pre- and Post-laboratory assessments and vocabulary words all target specific Science and Engineering Practices and common core standards. The teacher guide also contains specific "Did You Know" concepts that link the real world with scientific standards explored.

The kit is also available for purchase with a link to a NewPath digital lesson, which includes a variety of resources on the topic, including background information, illustrations and self-assessments.
