BioBuilder® Eau That Smell Kit
Combine the practice of Engineering with the teaching of Biology.

  • Teach growth properties of microbial populations
  • Teach fundamental synthetic biology concepts
  • Develop microbiology techniques and skills
  • Apply ideas to meaningful real world challenges
  • Analyze quantitative and qualitative results
This lab provides a valuable opportunity to teach microbiology techniques, population growth dynamics, molecular genetics and basic synthetic biology concepts in a meaningful, real world way. The analysis of the lab’s results will provide the students with a chance to think deeply about error analysis and examine the difference between quantitative results and qualitative results. This lab offers two different protocols based on the time the teacher wishes to allow, and can serve as a point of departure for genuinely investigative experimentation. One kit can accommodate 6 groups of 4 students.

Perishable Materials Include 4 E.coli samples (1-1, 1-2, 1-3, 1-4); Ampicillin, 3x 20 mg aliquot; Isoamyl alcohol, 1x 1 mL aliquot; Banana extract (amyl acetate), 7x 2 mL aliquot. Refill Kit Materials Include 4 E.coli samples: (1-1, 1-2, 1-3, 1-4); Luria Broth, 3x 200 mL bottle; Ampicillin, 3x 20 mg aliquot; Isoamyl alcohol, 1x 1 mL aliquot; Student instructions; and Teacher instructions. Additional BioBuilder Materials: A well-stocked lab will have things such as timers, test tube racks, Sharpies, and ice buckets (as well as ice!). The BioBuilder labs also assume that some consumable materials are available, like pipet tips and nitrile or latex gloves. Equipment for this experiment that is not provided include a roller wheel, stir plates or a platform shaker to grow and mix samples; An incubator to grow samples at 37°C, though the protocol works at room temperature too; 125 Erlenmeyer flasks; and a spectrophotometer, though turbidity standards can be used as well.
