Ward's® Detection of Colorectal Cancer Lab Activity
Students can perform the same test procedures that scientists use to identify genetic mutations that signify the presence of colorectal cancer and its cause.

  • Students Determine the Patterns of Heredity
  • Material for Six Lab Groups
  • Time Required: ~60 Minutes
  • For Employing Genetic Screening Techniques Used in Research Labs
Students run electrophoresis tests on DNA and analyze unstable DNA banding on the electrophoresis gel. DNA from a tumor appears as multiple bands instead of the normal two, indicating the presence of cancer.

After obtaining test results, students analyze the results and construct a family pedigree to determine the patterns of heredity. The activity comes with enough material to run three gels.
