A great exploration of soil formation - This kit allows you to take the students step by step through the many processes, biological, physical, and chemical, that lead to the formation of soil. I used this with my AP Environmental Science classes, and while some of the activities were pretty simple, some (like planting beans in the plaster of paris) were really attention getting. The materials are easy to refill, and now that I know

Teaches All About Soil

  • Demonstrate soil formation process
  • Differentiate between soil and sediment
  • Includes a teacher's guide
Even though soil forms a layer only a few feet thick in most parts of the world, all life depends on it. Students will learn how important it is by starting with the basics, learning exactly how soil is formed. They’ll make their own “rock” from carbonates, simulate the effects of acid rain by conducting experiments with vinegar and water, see the role plant life plays in the formation of soil, and learn how to determine the difference between finely crushed rock particles and true soil. The set includes enough materials for 15 setups, a teacher’s guide, and instructions.
