Three stages of fun investigation and experimentation can be adapted for completion in 12 class periods or extended as a year long project. Designed to address middle school national standards, this activity kit encourages students to conduct their own research and explore their scientific creativity. In the first exercise students write a report on inventors or inventions of a certain category, such as women inventors. The second activity leads students through the construction of one of six prototype mini-inventions included — a paper airplane, balloon car, egg drop, tin foil boat, and more. After designing, building, and testing their creations, students then evaluate results and modify their devices to beat the original performance. The final activity asks student to create their own invention using the knowledge learned in previous exercises. The culmination of all activities is an Invention Convention exhibit, much like a science fair, where students present their individual inventions. Includes materials for 30 students and instructions.
