Correction to Activity 2 - Note: In Activity #2, the DNA sequence does not contain two Hind III recognition sites.....and it should! Change 19th nucleotide to T and it will work.

Ward's® Mapping and Sequencing the Human Genome Lab Activity
Investigation and Poster Combine to Help Students Understand Biotechnology Techniques

  • Three activities included
  • Materials for 12 lab groups
  • Time Required: 120 minutes
The Human Genome Project has the ultimate goal to identify all human genes and match each gene to human traits. Through this work we will be able to determine which diseases and disorders are related to genetic mutations. With this knowledge we can establish treatments and cures. With our kit, students perform three activities utilizing colorful pop beads to re-create the process of DNA sequencing, as well as the function of restriction enzymes. In an additional activity, students use the included Human Genetic Disorders poster to locate the genes responsible for disorders on particular chromosomes. Any of the main lab activities can be completed in a 45-minute session. The activity includes enough materials for 12 setups, as well as a teacher’s guide and student copymaster.
