In this activity, designed by Rick Crosslin, students separate microfossils from an Ordovician-age dry clay soil sample and then observe them using hand lenses and/or stereomicroscopes. Upper-level students can also identify and classify the microfossils into the appropriate taxonomic group. Requires a microscope or stereomicroscope, not included. Two levels of instructions are included for grades 5–7 and 8–10. Includes materials for eight student groups.
