No, I didn't recommend
The Outreach team in my office was hoping to use this model at an upcoming exhibit. Upon receiving the product we were disappointed to see it was nothing like the picture. We expected it to be in pieces for assembling, but not for the pieces to be brightly colored. The picture above looks like an imposing metal structure, especially in comparison to the person standing next to it. But upon reviewing the product details, 42cm is not very high - certainly not as tall as the picture portrays! Without assembling the pieces, we don't know the full scope of this product's performance for future interested parties, but it was definitely not what our Outreach team was hoping to display. With the kit consisting of pieces of plastic, fishing line, and cardboard, the $300+ cost seems vastly overpriced.

Thank you for your feedback. I am sorry that the Minit DNA model did not meet your needs. Based on your comments we are updating the website. The final model is approximately 1m tall and 42cm in diameter, when assembled and suspended. The peg and straw molecular construction is not strong enough to be self-supporting at this size, so the model is intended to be supported from the top. If you would like some suggestions of other possible models for your outreach program I would be happy assist you via email. Thank you again for your feedback.

Minit® DNA Model
Models Botany Models
An impressive molecular biology teaching resource and display model.

  • Aids in understanding of DNA structure
  • Assembly engages students
  • Connectors are differentiated for hydrogen bonding
Building the DNA model engages and educates students. Groups can work together to make up the subassemblies – 15 Thymine-Adenine and Cytosine-Guanine base pairs, sugar rings and phosphate groups – which are joined together to make one and a half turns of the double helix and to show the major and minor grooves of the protein lysozyme.

Each atom is shown, color-coded, with the correct bonding angle and colored bonds indicate covalent or hydrogen bonding.

Constructed using the Minit molecular modeling system, the finished model is 1m high and 42cm wide and can be suspended from a suitable hook.

The kit contains 880 atoms and 1200 bonding straws, support plates for hanging the model plus assembly instructions and a worksheet.
