All-Inclusive Investigation Covers Key Biotechnology Procedures

Bacterial transformation, plasmid DNA isolation, and electrophoresis are all included in this comprehensive lab activity that can be completed in two 60-minute sessions. Students transform E. colicells by inserting the plasmid pUC19 to confer antibiotic resistance on the cells and use an easy, safe mini-prep method to isolate the plasmid. Students then run a gel, comparing the isolated plasmid to a known sample to confirm that the plasmid is pUC19. The kit includes enough materials to run eight gels, a teacher’s guide, and student copymaster.

Materials required, not included: An electrophoresis chamber, power supply, and 1-20 μL micropipettes.
