Ward's Chemistry Synthesis, Isolation, and Purification of an Ester Lab Activity
In this lab, students learn techniques of organic synthesis by reacting an alcohol and an acid to form an ester.

Students will go through the techniques of refluxing, extractions, and distillation; then the theoretical yield and the percent yield will be determined. This lab was designed to align to AP Lab Standard - Synthesis, Purification, and Analysis of an Organic Compound. Distillation setup is required but not included.

Chemical Contents: Acetic Acid, Sulfuric Acid, Ethyl Alcohol, Sodium Carbonate Decahydrate, Boiling Stones.

Additional Materials Required: Analytical Balance, 50 mL Beaker, 600 mL Beaker, Clamps, Glass Joint Grease, Hot Plate, Plastic Tubing, Ring Stand, Separatory Funnel, Thermometer, Distillation Setup.
