Transduction Lab Failure - This experiment HAS NOT WORKED the past 3 years that I have attempted (6 tries). They promise me every time that they have made "corrections" but still, no success. Save your districts money!!!

Ward's® Transduction of E.coli Lab Activity
Educational Materials Biology Educational Materials Genetics Learning Activities
Use Viruses to Deliver Genetic Material into Bacteria

  • Discuss applications for viral-induced genetic engineering
  • Materials for 8 lab groups
  • Time Required: ~120 minutes
Demonstrate transduction using a mutant E. coli, which is incapable of producing beta-galactosidase for lactose breakdown, and a lambda phage carrying the lac+ phenotype. Students will observe and differentiate between plaques and colonies to discover how this relates the lytic and lysogenic phases of transduction, and then will use their results to calculate the incidence of transduction for each plate. It includes enough materials for eight setups, a teacher’s guide, and student copymaster.
