No, I didn't recommend
The equipment and instructions were useful but the Kidney Bean seeds were inviable. My students and I planted over 80 seeds and none of them grew. I even gave them to our master gardener and he was unable to grow them. Most of the seeds rotted. I even tried dark room germination on filter paper to no avail. I then had to get my own bean seeds from a local nursery and they grew in the same conditions with close to 100% germination.

Thank you for your feedback. We are glad you felt the instructions and equipment in this kit were useful. We're extremely sorry to read that your bean seeds did not grow – that is very frustrating for you and your students! Perhaps the seeds had passed their viable date. Our Warehouse Associates are very attentive to expiration date on products, but this may have slipped their attention. We understand time is vital in this lab, but our Customer Care Department should have been able to replace your seeds very quickly. We hope you will give us another chance to restore your faith in our products.

Yes, I recommend
Nice traditional potometer kit! - For teachers who enjoy having students investigate transpiration using potometers, this kit has "good stuff". Everything needed for setting up potometer using ring stands or for taping them to the wass is here. Soil and seeds for growing plants included. Teachers would have to provide clear nail polish and transparent tape if they prefer that method for doing a leaf peel.

Ward's® AP Biology Investigation 11: Interactions: Transpiration
Educational Materials Biology Educational Materials AP Biology Learning Activities
Meets AP Science Practices 1, 2, 4, 6, and 7

  • Quantitatively measure the transpiration rate
  • The effect of surface area of the leaf is evidenced using two separate activities
In this investigation, students explore factors that affect the rate of transpiration both in the short term of an experiment as well as within evolutionary context. By analyzing stomata density in leaf types and constructing a simple potometer to determine rate of transpiration, students will discover how plants adapt to changing environments to regulate water loss and photosynthesis.

The Only Kits Aligned with AP Science Practices. Ward's AP Biology Investigations provide complete coverage of the Four Big Ideas and Seven Science Practices to help you meet new AP Biology curriculum standards and prepare students for real-world success in college and research-level labs. Each investigation follows a series of three parts, beginning with a structured lab investigation, followed by a related guided inquiry investigation with thoughtful assessment questions, and finally, suggestions to encourage students to formulate their own questions and explore further self-guided experimentation. This complete series of investigations emphasizes the progression to fully student-directed investigations and builds competence in all of the science practices, helping students:
• Practice concept application instead of fact memorization.
• Focus on self-guided experimentation instead of step-by-step lab procedure.
• Investigate real-world concepts with greater curriculum flexibility.
• Apply problem-solving skills to strengthen student inquiry.
