Ward's® Live E. coli cultures for Coliphage Use
A collection of some of the strains of Escherichia coli needed to grow various coliphages (available separately).
The successful culture of a large volume of coliphage requires growing the appropriate host bacterium in tryptic soy broth at 37 °C. Several strains of host bacteria are available.
: Strain B: Optimum host for all T phages.
Strain C: Optimum host for PhiX coliphages; will also support T2 growth.
Strain K12: Lysogenic for coliphage lambda; supports reproduction of wild type T4, resulting in lysis. T4rII mutants do not form plaques. Host for T4rllA and T4rllB phages. Lysogenic for lambda phages. Used to study point mutations in cistron A and B.
Strain: W3104: Lysogenic for coliphage lambda. Ultraviolet radiation is effective in prophage induction.
Bacterial and fungal cultures are restricted and can only be ordered by educational professionals.
: Although this organism is non pathogenic, Ward’s recommends that you utilize proper aseptic technique when handling all microorganisms.
