Moment of Inertia Demonstrator

This machine, designed by teacher Bruce Yeany, offers a hands-on demonstration of the relationship between the moment of inertia and the distribution of mass.

Hold the demonstrator in one hand, slide the attached blocks in either direction from the center of the meter stick, and rotate. By sliding the blocks toward the ends of the meter stick, students observe that it takes a certain amount of effort to rotate the demonstrator.

Now slide the blocks in toward the center of the stick, and note that less force is required to rotate the stick.
