Ferns follow a life cycle with alternating generations. Start with the sporophyte and follow along the entire cycle through the gametocytes back to the sporophyte. Whole mounts contain the entire specimen allowing for an easy understanding of the stage, while the sections allow for better visualization of the structures themselves.
