Les spécimens vivants sont utilisés dans une grande variété d’études, notamment l’analyse des effets physiologiques des médicaments sur le rythme cardiaque, l’effet de la température sur le métabolisme, la locomotion des organismes microscopiques, ainsi que l’étude de la respiration, de la photosynthèse, de la plasmolyse des plantes, etc. Les cultures d’algues forment des colonies cellulaires faciles à observer, ce qui permet de mieux comprendre les parois cellulaires et les plastes. De nombreux spécimens vivants se reproduisent rapidement, ce qui facilite le roulement entre les tests successifs.
