General-purpose sieves are useful for differentiating fine and coarse solid materials of varying sizes. Consecutively finer and finer gradated sieves sift through a weighed sample, and the analysis is used to describe the properties of the aggregate and to see if it is appropriate for various civil engineering purposes. The meshes are typically made of brass, a combination of brass and stainless steel, or stainless steel based on straining preference.
